The Nature Conservancy near Cape May Point State Park is famous for attracting various species of birds, as well as bird watchers. One birder in particular, Tom Reed a 23 year old man from Middle Township, is well on his way to setting the record for the most species of birds spotted in New Jersey in one year. Reed shattered the current record set in 2002 by Rick Wiltraut of Pennsylvania at 337 by already identifying 342 species.
Although a resident of Upper Township, MikeFritz, has identified 340 different birds this year, Tom Reed remains undeterred. Young Mr. Reed is still on a quest to set the bar and, due to his observations taking place at the Lower Cape May Meadows we feel he has a pretty good chance. The positioning of the Atlantic Flyway path (the migratory path where birds cross and concentrate) along the southern New Jersey coastline offer the best odds in Reed’s favor.
