Cape May Fall Festivals: Where you’ll want to be this October!

The sun is setting on September 2016. One of the most beautiful months of the year has come and gone, and we’ve officially made a full transition into Fall. The Fall is a polarizing season…but not in a negative way! Many among us are extremely excited for football season while others don’t know or care about the game at all. The same can be said of Halloween; a favorite of many…but for others just a holiday to tolerate (and a good excuse to eat excess candy!). Then there’s the weather; a crispness and clarity that for many is ideal…but of course there are those mourning the loss of blistering beach days and warm, muggy nights. Whatever you think about Fall, one thing safe to say is that it’s a FUN time in Cape May. We welcome October and are excited to tell you about what’s in store this month…so read on to find out more!

Many of Cape May’s September events are perfect for the transitioning of the seasons. However the arrival of October brings a bevy of events tailored to the ultimate autumn lover. This year, October 1st is a Saturday! To celebrate, Cape May is starting the month off right with Oktoberfest on historic Jackson Street. The street will be closed to vehicular traffic and will be transformed into a German promenade! Traditional German food and music will be featured, and artisan crafted goods and collectibles will be available for purchase. There will even be a beer Garden! Jackson Street is THE place to be this Saturday between 10 am and 5 pm, as Oktoberfest is a simply fabulous way to ring in the month. The best part? After spending some time at the festival, just stroll over to the Washington Street Mall or up to the Cape May promenade and continue your weekend wandering. From shopping to dinging to just plain sightseeing…there’s always something to explore.

vineyard-1051683_960_720Despite our excitement about the imminent Oktoberfest, we’re also willing to admit that it does fall into the category of polarizing events that might not be everyone’s “thing”. So if you’re in search of a more subtle afternoon but are still thirsting for some exploring, check out the Cape May Wine Trail. You’ll start the event with lunch at The Carriage House Cafe and Tearoom (located at the Emlen Physick Estate), then it’s all aboard the trolley for stops at Willow Creek Winery, Hawk Haven Vineyard & Winery, and Natali Vineyards. The cost is $75 per person and includes lunch, wine tastings at each location, and a wine tasting glass! Two out of the three wineries to be visited are located offshore, so a perk of this event is that it’s also a chance to see a bit of “off-island” Cape May county…just another way of exploring like a local. We should also mention that while at the Physick Estate, you’ll certainly want to check out the Autumn Festival Crafts and Collectibles show-featuring the works of crafters from throughout the region.

As we move through October we will be met with Victorian weekend on the 8th,fallpond3
9th, and 10th. This is one of Cape May’s most popular weekends of the year! It’s a celebration of the town’s Victorian roots, and an ideal time to relax and bask in the beauty of fall. Coinciding with Victorian weekend is the venerable West Cape May Lima Bean festival in Wilbraham Park. The
unique festival has long been a favorite of locals and visitors alike. In fact, many enjoy the tradition of escaping to Cape May each year for this one of a kind event. It begins at 9 am and runs until 5 pm. There will be recipes, crafts, and entertainment all centered around the Lima bean! And yes, speaking of polarizing…we’re aware that Lima beans are either loved or loathed. But trust us, even if Lima beans aren’t at all pleasing to your palate, you’ll still enjoy yourself at this lively event-as it’s truly a fun time for all ages. Homestead will be present as well…so please stop by and see us. Look for the Homestead tent!

An additional event that begins on Saturday, October 8th (and continues each week until 11/5) is the Fall Festival at Beach Plum Farm. The lovely Beach Plum Farm (in West Cape may just near the Willow Creek Winery) will feature seasonal fresh foods, craft beer from the Cape May Brewery, hayrides, and much more! You can also just relax and stroll around the breathtaking 62 acre farm-all the while forgetting that the Ocean is mere minutes away. It’s like being in the country and at the beach simultaneously-and nothing much sounds better than that!

While most of Cape May’s major events (including those listed above) take place on weekends from now through the winter season, weekdays in October still find many local establishments open for business. If you’re able to explore Cape May during the week at this time of year, it’s a great time to get acquainted with the local population. Business owners and local employees are often able to entertain general conversation and conduct more personalized, old fashioned service. We recommend a Thursday through Sunday/Monday stay at this time of the year. You’ll experience the tranquil pace of the late week followed by the bustle and buzz of an autumn weekend-truly the best of both worlds here in Cape May.

DSCN1085In addition to long weekend rentals, Homestead is witnessing a continued rental momentum even as we move into October! Numerous homes are nearly booked solid for the 2017 season. If you traditionally wait until after the holidays to book your Cape May vacation, you may want to consider moving the timetable forward a bit. We still expect a sizable rental inventory to be available as we move into the winter…but if you’re very specific about your rental property location and/or features, the time to reserve is NOW! Homestead is open year round from 9 am thru 5 pm everyday except Sunday. Give us a call or stop by and see us. We’d love to help you find your dream rental in Cape May!

We hope everyone has a wonderful weekend and is as excited about October as we are! But even if you’re not, we encourage you to try and find something about the fall season that you love. And if you’re here in Cape May, the search for that something will certainly not prove to be a challenge.

Here’s how to Fall into Autumn in Cape May!

While Labor Day marked the unofficial end of the summer season nearly 2 weeks ago, it hasn’t quite felt like autumn here in Cape May. But it had to arrive eventually! And while it’s actually forecast to be quite warm again next week, we’ve been enjoying a few days of temperatures that are-dare we say-crisp! It bears repeating that the fall is simply one of our favorite times of the year here in Cape May. Along with all the common seasonal favorites-think pumpkin spice, cornstalks, and mums-fall in Cape May means tranquility, festivals, golden sunsets and diminishing daylight. While in the late spring we welcome daylight that lingers long into the evening, this is the time to enjoy the shortening days, to refresh after a long hot summer, and most of all, to explore Cape May the Homestead way-like a local!

Cape May, or “Cape Island” as it is often called, is not an original island. In fact, it’s not even a barrier island. Until the canal connecting Cape Harbor and the Delaware Bay was constructed during world War II, Cape May was all part of the county mainland. It’s for this reason that unlike some of the more spartan barrier island communities, our landscape is filled with lush vegetation. While our mild autumn weather prevents foliage from “peaking” until about mid November, this does not stop the trees from turning an ever so slight shade of gold, or the leaves from beginning to slowly float to the ground like the first flakes of snow in winter. This natural landscape of autumn only serves to enhance the breathtaking beauty of Cape May’s Victorian architecture, which can be viewed via walking, guided carriage tours, trolley tours, bicycle rides, or even a leisurely drive (which is a much easier proposition now that the summer traffic has lifted).

fallflowersAs for Homestead rentals, a truly wonderful aspect of the fall season is that many properties are available to rent for long weekends, or even short term mid-week getaways. And in September, most Cape May businesses are still open 6 or 7 days per week (with Thursday through Sunday nearly guaranteed). For example, going on 9/15 through 9/18 is the Cape May Fall Sidewalk Sale on the Washington Street mall. This is a wonderful opportunity to explore and procure truly unique clothing, jewelry, artisan crafts and more at deals that may not occur again before the holiday season. We recommend getting a jump start on your shopping now!

If you’re going to be in town this weekend, the Lighthouse Full Moon Climb is anmoon-1202726_960_720 event not to be missed. The full moon will be a harvest moon…and with the clear autumn weather, it promises to be an absolutely gorgeous site! Although we highly recommend it, if climbing the lighthouse is not on the agenda the moon is still sure to illuminate the beach, and even the promenade (specifically the east and west ends where the electric lights are more sporadic).

On Saturday, 9/17, we encourage you to participate in the Mutt Strut! This annual event takes place on the Cape May promenade and raises about $5000 per year to benefit local canine programs. Registration takes place near Convention Hall on the promenade. And even if you don’t have a participating pet, it is still a fun event for the whole family to experience.

Happening at Historic Cold Spring Village on 9/17 and 9/18 is Civil War Weekend. Battle reenactments will take place at 2 pm each day. Vendors will also be on site with reproductions and merchandise representing the civil war era. It’s an educational day for all.

cape-may-90626_960_720Another annual autumn event is Cape May’s Dragon Boat Festival, located at the Cape May Harbor and taking place on Saturday, 9/24. Assemble a team of 20 members and have fun all while raising money for your favorite charity. No experience necessary either!

Homestead truly hopes everyone is able to enjoy this beautiful weekend and the subsequent autumn weeks that follow. As always, we remind you to reserve your off-season getaway with us! And we also encourage you to reserve your rental for next season. 2017 rates are nearly set at most of our rental properties, so book early to ensure that you receive your first choice of property for your 2017 vacation. It’s always exciting to look forward to summer vacation and the beach, but for now, don’t forget to stop and fully enjoy all that this blossoming autumn season has to offer. You will be so glad you did!

Send off Summer the Cape May way! Here’s what’s going on…

Can you believe Labor Day weekend is upon us? Here at Homestead, we certainly can’t! The unofficial end of the summer season may be here, but there is still plenty happening around town! For those of you who are Cape May veterans, you know that unlike numerous other resort communities, our town does not close for the season on Labor Day weekend. In fact, a whole new season begins. Often referred to as the “shoulder season” or “value season”, this is the time of year when a majority of our rental homes offer competitive pricing, short term rentals, flexible check in/out times, and more! The required rigidity of the summer season is replaced by a welcome and more relaxed pace during the week, followed by weekends with a buzz in the air rivaling any day in July or August. It’s the perfect time of year if you’re truly looking to experience a bit of everything that Cape May has to offer.

As for Labor Day weekend, it’s one of the very busiest times of the year here in town. This year, our weather forecast is not looking like it will be conducive to marathon beach days. While this is a disappointment to be sure, don’t let the potential storm discourage you from enjoying your final days of summer. Here’s a bit of what is planned to be going on around town:

The West Cape May Tomato Festival will take place on Saturday, September 3rd between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm at Wilbraham Park. The festival celebrates the Jersey Fresh Tomato and the end of the summer season. All proceeds will benefit the West Cape May Shade Tree Commission. Be sure to visit the Homestead team while you’re there. We will be on site to answer your real estate questions, and you know you want to enter for a chance to win the 2016 Tomato Festival beach chair! Entertainment will include a performance from The Squares, featuring Homestead’s very own rental team member, Debra Donahue. We look forward to seeing you there!

After a visit to the Tomato Festival, enjoy an afternoon sail on New Jersey’s historic tall ship, the A.J. Meerwald. Reservations are suggested for this event, and tickets are required for all passengers. Head on over to Utch’s Marina at 1:30 pm (until about 4:00) and experience the fascinating A.J. Meerwald while learning a good deal of history while you’re at it. This is a perfect family event and will certainly provide the kids with interesting discussion during their upcoming first weeks in school!

On both Saturday and Sunday, September 3rd and 4th, the ever popular summer send off craft show will be taking place on Cape May’s promenade. The show will be open from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm and will feature a wide variety of handmade crafts including jewelry, clothing, and home decor! If you’re leaving Cape May for the season, the craft show is the ideal arena to pick up a little piece of the town that can remain with you throughout the year.

Saturday, September 3rd and Sunday, September 4th at 7:00 pm there will be a FREE concert at Cape May’s newly redesigned Rotary Park (between Decatur and Jackson streets). Enjoy the sounds of The Cumberland County College Jazz Band and Wind Symphony on Saturday. On Sunday, the Cape Harmonies will be performing. The concerts are fun events for the entire family to enjoy.

Head over to 500 Hughes St. on Saturday, September 3rd at 8:30 pm to see the final performance of “Dracula”, presented by the East Lynne Theatre Company. The possible rainy evening will create the perfect setting to experience this classic drama!

ON Sunday, September 4th between 10:30 am and 4:00 pm, Cold Spring Village is the place to be for “Hands on History”. Have fun at attempting crafts and trades from the 1800’s. Children can even receive free treats from the country store for completing activities!

In addition to these holiday weekend events, don’t forget to experience Cape May like a local. Check out some of our tried and true favorites that recur throughout the fall, including Fire Pit Friday at the Willow Creek Winery in West Cape May, Open Mic Night a the Mad Batter on Sunday, September 3rd and Dulaney & Rutherford at The Rusty Nail on Monday, September 4th.

Homestead knows that at this time everyone has their eyes on the weather forecast…and we do as well. We will be open Friday, September 2nd and Saturday, September 3rd from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm, and we will do our very best to provide information regarding any changes to planned events, as well as cancellations should they occur. At this time we believe it will only be outdoor events that will be subject to cancellation and or weather related adjustments.

As per usual, Homestead will be closed on Sunday, September 4th. We will also be closed on Monday, September 5th in observance of the Labor Day holiday. We will return to the office promptly at 9:00 am on Tuesday, September 6th. Please remember that our state of the art sales and rental websites are available 24/7, so we encourage you to explore them. The slower pace of autumn is the ideal time to begin researching next year’s vacation…or maybe even consider a permanent vacation with a move to the Cape May area!

We wish everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend and look forward to an exciting autumn season. The summer may be drawing to a close, but the fun times in Cape May most certainly are not.

Your 2017 Cape May Vacation: What you need to know NOW!

It’s a bit hard to believe, but we’re heading into the third week of August! Here in Cape May it’s still sizzling hot, tropically humid, and teeming with vacationers, locals, day trippers, and everyone in between! The prime season this year has been BUSY…so busy, in fact, that it’s easy to forget labor day being merely around the corner. With it will come the official end to summer’s prime season. School begins, the weather ever so slightly cools, and a slower pace gradually overtakes the Cape May community. In short, the wave of summer recedes just as quickly as it washed over us. Autumn is the favored season of many Cape May locals and regular visitors. In the coming weeks we will certainly be keeping you up to date as to the happenings around town after the summer dust settles! But before we set our sights on crisp breezes and long autumn weekends, it’s time to talk about something a bit further away…your 2017 summer vacation!

beachfence

Yes…you heard right. We know that summer 2016 has not yet drawn to a close. In fact, many of you have yet to arrive for your 2016 Cape May vacation! How could we possibly be talking about NEXT summer? Well, we are talking about it because YOU, our rental guests, are talking about it! This year, Homestead’s rental team is witnessing an unprecedented demand for 2017 rentals. We are fielding a steady stream of 2017 rental inquiries unlike we’ve ever seen in previous years. This certainly excites us…but we’ve also realized that there is an element of misinformation regarding the process of booking your rental for next year. We strive to cultivate a seamless booking process so that your Cape May vacation planning is what it should be…fun! So without further ado, here are some of our most common questions regarding booking a rental for next summer, asked and answered.

Q. “Is 2017 really COMPLETELY booked at this property? The calendar says so!”

A. No! The vast majority of rental homes have already secured reservations for next summer, but they are NOT fully booked. Property rental rates must be finalized in our computer system before the availability will reflect on our website calendars. Many of these rates will not be final until the beginning of September-when the re-booking season is complete. So when browsing our website, please contact us regarding ANY property that you are interested in! Our rental team is able to quickly check the availability and suggest alternative offerings should your first choice property indeed be unavailable.

Q. “What exactly IS the ‘re-booking season’”?

A. This is a very good question, especially if you have not previously rented with Homestead. The re-booking policy is in a state of flux….but the current policy states that any tenant who checks out of a rental property this year has first right of refusal for the SAME property and SAME week in 2017…and said tenant has one week from date of checkout to make their decision about next year. We are often able to confirm a re-booking before this one week is up…so if you are interested in a property that is currently rented, don’t hesitate to contact us! You’ll be first on our list to contact should the 2016 tenants choose not to re-book.

Q. “Can I place ‘hold’ on a property for awhile, or must I secure a lease right away?”

A. Due to the competitive nature of the rental market, Homestead cannot hold properties for any length of time. Exceptions do occur (like if we are waiting on rates from a rental owner, for example), but the general rule is that you must fully commit to a rental property and be prepared to execute a lease in order for us to hold said property in your name.

Q. “Does Homestead require a deposit for my 2017 rental?”

A. Yes we do. Bookings for 2017 made prior to December 1st will be placed on a 3 payment schedule. After December 1st, payments are required in 2 installments.

Q. “Does Homestead accept credit card payment? Is there an additional cost for this?”

A. Yes and NO! Homestead was the first rental agency in Cape May to accept credit cards for payment. We began doing so over 10 years ago. As credit card payment for rentals is becoming more ubiquitous, some local companies have chosen to pass the credit card fees onto their guests. Homestead respectfully disagrees with this practice. Be assured that there is NO additional cost to you for booking your rental with a credit card! (Visa, MasterCard, and Discover accepted). ACH electronic check payments and traditional checks are also acceptable methods of payment.

Q. “What happens if I cancel my reservation?”

A. Once Homestead receives a rental installment payment, the property owner is paid for the portion of said rental. Should you cancel your reservation, the owner is under no obligation to return ANY money to you unless the property re-rents for the cancelled week. We strongly encourage the purchase of travel insurance to protect your vacation investment, especially if you’re booking a year in advance! For more information please refer to Homestead’s full cancellation policy located under our guest guidelines.

Q. “Do you have any rental properties that are not listed on your website?”

A. Homestead’s team works diligently to ensure that ALL rental properties are featured on our website as soon as they come into our inventory. So yes, the properties you will see featured are an exhaustive list of what is CURRENTLY available. Please keep in mind that we have new rentals entering our inventory almost every week. If you can’t find a property that suits you or your party, give us a call and let us know what your needs are! We will have you first on the list to contact should we know of a property coming to the market that will interest you.

Can you think of anything else? Let us know! We hope we’ve helped prepare you for booking your 2017 rental, and we encourage you not to delay. Prime booking season begins after the first of the year, but if current trends continue, there will be many homes nearly at full capacity by that time. Don’t miss out on your dream rental! Enjoy these remaining weeks of summer 2016, but remember that the 2017 season will come around fast. Will you be ready?

Cape May winter rentals are hot!

Happy Friday from Homestead! We truly hope everyone is set for a beautiful summer weekend. It is once again predicted to be hot and humid, so conditions will be ideal for beach days and barbecuing. We are at the height of the summer season now! With only one month until Labor Day, it’s the time to be enjoying summer to the fullest. We’re pleased to see our guests and locals alike doing just that; for as swiftly as summer arrived, we know that the Cape May off season will be equally as quick to replace it.

Speaking of autumn, as with many aspects of life, the change of seasons can becape may off season quite polarizing! While some would gladly accept an endless summer, we know there are those of you who are looking ahead to autumn or even winter. Maybe you wish to visit Cape May for an off season getaway, or perhaps you will be working in the Cape May area for the winter and require a longer-term retreat. Whatever the case may be, it’s time to talk about off-season rentals!

In recent years, Homestead has seen an uptick in the number of inquiries that we receive for an off-season, weekend rentals. Weddings, birthdays, retreat weekends and reunions are just a sampling of the events that regularly take place in Cape May every weekend in autumn. Of course, all of these events are buoyed by Cape May’s “shoulder season”. It’s true that after Labor Day many Cape May businesses DSCN1085gradually begin to decrease their hours of operation…but on weekends nearly all of the local restaurants, shops, and attractions remain open for business! If you’re staying (or have recently stayed) in one of our vacation rentals and would like to return to the property for a weekend in the fall or winter…ask us if it’s available! And if you’re looking ahead to the holiday season and wish to celebrate at the shore this year…we have rentals available for Christmas and Thanksgiving too!

For some, we understand that off-season stints in Cape May are business related, and in these cases, a multi-month rental is often what’s required. We refer to such rentals as “winter rentals”,  and we do have a wide selection of them available. There are properties suited to nearly all budgets and time frames. Keep in mind though that many property owners do in fact winterize their homes and suspend their rentals until the spring. Therefore; those properties that DO rent throughout the winter will be suddenly in demand and will book faster than one might think. Don’t wait until it’s too late! Research and book your winter rental now and enjoy Cape May at the height of tranquility (even if it IS work that will be bringing you here!)

IMG_5429910 Lafayette St. Cottage: Instantly feel at home in this charming 1 bedroom cottage ideal for 1 or 2 occupants. The location of this property makes entering and exiting Cape may a breeze!

Please note that this is not an exhaustive list of our winter rental inventory. If you have a property in mind that you would like to call home this winter, inquire with us as to its availability and pricing! If your first choice is not available, we will work to locate a comparable property and location to best suit your needs. Rent for winter rentals is traditionally paid month by month, but custom payment schedules are available depending on your property of choice.

At this time, we at Homestead would like to encourage everyone to continue enjoying balmy summer evenings, long hot beach days, and all matters of fun in the sun! But remember, time moves along quickly. In just over a month the first hint of autumn will be imminent, and winter will be right on its heels. Is Cape May where YOU want to be when the air becomes crisp and the leaves brilliantly vibrant?… it’s a thought worth pondering while you enjoy the last weeks of summer.

We wish everyone a wonderful weekend. Stay safe, have fun, and stay cool by turning your thoughts to falling leaves, fire pits, and brisk sunset beach walks. The seasons will always change…but your fun in Cape May doesn’t have to turn with them.

Summer in its Prime!

It seems like only yesterday we were speaking of snow on the ground and the tranquility of winter in Cape May…yet here we are, rounding the corner of late July into the beginning of August. It’s truly hard to believe just how quickly the time has passed once again. This is Cape May’s prime season. The next 3 weeks will be the busiest of the summer, and we encourage you to enjoy them to the fullest!

af7116c0-714a-48fb-85e8-61549e38bef7It goes without saying that the beach is a top priority at this point in the year. Temperatures this summer have soared into the 90’s with humidity levels hovering around the same number. For many, such conditions are ideal beach weather. Here at Homestead we regularly praise the Cape May beaches for their tranquility, diverse landscape, and unique ability to appeal to all tastes. As it would seem, we are not alone in that line of thinking. Not only are Cape May beaches some of the most popular in the State of New Jersey, they have once again been listed among the best in the country! Whether it be an early morning stroll, an entire day (or week!) of sunbathing and surfing, or just an evening view of the scorching summer sunset; be sure to incorporate the beach into your plans over the next few weeks.

Now, we know what you’re thinking. We know animals-1010643_960_720because it’s one of the most common questions that our guests ask of us. That is: What is there to do when it’s not an ideal beach day? This is a very good question indeed. While Cape May typically experiences beautiful weather throughout the summer, one must remember that we are still part of a subtropical climate prone to the occasional showery day. Some daytime shopping, dining out, and historic trolley tours are all tried and true, fantastic options. But one of our best recommendations is to visit a place that is not just one of Cape May County’s best kept secrets, but apparently one of the best kept on the entire globe! We’re talking about the Cape May County Zoo. According to a recent article from nj.com, our local zoo is named by Trip Advisor as the 13th best Zoo in the world, and the 5th best in the nation. The best part? It’s only a short drive up the Garden State Parkway (Exit 11). Admission and parking are free (although donations are appreciated!). Even if your current or upcoming vacation week contain perfect beach days every day, we highly recommend a jaunt to the zoo. It’s an enjoyable experience you won’t soon forget.

There are a bevy of additional activities taking place in Cape May over the next few weeks, and here are a few that we’d like to highlight…

Thursday, 7/21: Movies on the Beach presents “Tommorowland” beginning at 8:30 pm on the Stockton Avenue beach.

The always popular Fire Pit Friday’s at Willow Creek Winery in West Cape May (taking place every Friday through the summer!)

Saturday, 7/23: The West Cape May Elementary School PTA presents the “Art and Heritage Festival” featuring local artists and crafters. (10 am thru 6 pm at West Cape May Borough Hall).

Sunday, 7/24: There will be a free evening concert at the Rotary Park featuring the Congress Street Brass Band. (Park located between Decatur and Jackson streets, and the time will be 7pm until 8:30 pm). This is a very exciting event, as major renovations to the park will be unveiled!  on Friday 7/22!

Monday, 7/25 will feature Christmas in July at the Cape May Lighthouse! Fun for the whole family will abound, and children will also have the chance to visit Santa!

Tuesday, July 25th (and every Tuesday in the summer) be sure to visit the West Cape May Farmers Market located at West Cape May Borough Hall on Broadway. The market spans from 3 pm until 7:30 pm and features not only fresh produce, but also antiques, art, and various local goods available for purchase. While you’re there, be sure to stop by and say “Hi” to Homestead, because we have our very own booth at the market! The entire experience invokes the fantastic sense of a tight knit local community that West Cape May is especially famous for.

While summer in Cape May is the busiest of seasons, it is in turn also the fastest of them. Don’t worry, we will be sure to touch on the wonders of autumn in Cape May when the time comes, and there are recent days in which we must admit that a nice crisp breeze would feel quite lovely; but for now, we’re still focused on the summer! Join us in that focus and enjoy the best days of summer 2016 before it’s past its prime! You’ll no doubt discover why Cape May has earned the right to be listed among the nation’s best seaside resort communities, and we’re confident that you will want to return!

Celebrate Independence Day in Cape May

If you’re looking to spend 4th of July in one of the most historic places in America, then Cape May is the perfect choice. Cape May is designated a National Historic Landmark City – the only city in America that has this distinction. Seashore resorts that allow you to explore homes nearly the same age as our country are few and far between, but this exploration is exactly what an Independence day spent here will allow you to do. Cape May will offer you the best of the best…from great Victorian architecture to beautiful beaches to fun family events.

If you’re going to be in town during the week of Independence Day, here’s some of the best things to do in Cape May for the 4th of July and the days leading up to it.

Independence Day Events

The Cape May Independence Day parade will kick off on Saturday, July 2nd at 1:00 pm. Secure a place on Beach Avenue for a view of holiday floats, decorated vehicles, bands, and much more.

Historic Cold Spring Village presents its Independence Day celebration on Saturday, July 1st & Sunday, July 2nd. There will be family activities, patriotic themed programs and live music as well.

On Monday, July 3rd, take a short drive “over the bridge” to North Cape May for Lower Township’s annual Independence Day Festival. Beginning at 5:00 pm, the festival will take place on Beach Drive (right on the bay) between Lincoln Boulevard and Emerson Avenue. A beautiful fireworks display will be presented at 9:00 pm against the backdrop of the gorgeous Delaware Bay. We recommend arriving in time to see the sunset, as on the bay it is every bit as stunning as the fireworks that will follow!

Also on Monday, July 3rd, Congress Hall will be presenting a carnival on their Grand Lawn. At this family event, you’ll experience games, face painting, balloon twisting, and of course multiple choices of food and seashore treats. You will even be presented with the opportunity to take part in a pig race!

On Independence Day, Tuesday, July 4th, bring your holiday weekend to a close in grand style by viewing Cape May’s very own fireworks display. Fireworks will begin at approximately 9 pm at Congress Beach. They are visible from the beach, the promenade, and any beach front building! If you’ll be staying in town, we recommend biking or walking up to the beach for the fireworks, as it’s a bit easier than navigating through traffic in your car.

Let’s Talk About the Beach!

IMG_1537Here at Homestead, we have spent the winter and latter part of the spring highlighting all of the fabulous year round events that Cape May has to offer. We emphasize that Cape May is so much more than just a beach town. And while we stand firm on this fact, we know that with the summer a mere days away and the weather and water warming rapidly….it’s time to talk about the beach!
Cape May’s beaches are continually voted among the best not only on the east coast, but in the entire country. We believe the reason for this is simple. Although Cape May is a small town, the diversity of the beachscape is unparalleled. Much the same as the area rental homes, restaurants, and shopping destinations are tailored to multiple needs and desires, Cape May’s beaches naturally offer something for everyone.

If you’re a repeat Cape May guest, we’re sure you are familiar with the DSCN0428Promenade. It’s a lovely seawall that doubles as a walking path. Biking is even permitted so long as it is prior to 10:00 am. With the exception of Cape May’s convention hall and a handful of proprietors, most of the promenade offers completely unobstructed views of the shimmering Atlantic Ocean. And as for the beaches, the majority of Cape May’s most popular are set against the backdrop of the Promenade area. If your idea of the perfect beach day is one accompanied by ice cream, mini golf, and maybe an impromptu arcade or shopping trip, then the beach location for you should be anywhere between Perry and Howard Streets. Married to the center of town, these beaches are convenient to most other attractions. Of course this also makes them among the most populated, but not so much that they aren’t a tranquil experience. This is definitely our recommended beach area if you’re plans are to arrive at the beach mid morning and leave with the sunset!

Following the promenade east will lead you to its end and the area known as Poverty Beach. The sand is a bit coarser and you’ll be a further walking distance from the bustle of town. But parking is more plentiful and the crowd more spartan. It’s the ideal beach to visit if you’d like to spend a few hours getting lost in a book or simply laying back and absorbing the salt air and the tranquility of nature’s beauty. Evening surf fishing is permitted as well, so long as you claim a spot east of Baltimore Avenue’s intersection with the beachfront.

Sun AutumnHead west on the promenade to its end and find yourself at Broadway and the Cove beaches. Long standing local favorites, these beaches are once again within a walking distance to town and offer stunning views of the Cape May lighthouse. They are perfect beaches to visit if you really want to feel like a Cape May native. The lifeguard station is located nearby at Beach and Grant Street, and the jetty at the end of First Avenue is a must for the surf fisherman. Parking is metered at Broadway and the Cove, so arriving earlier in the day is your best bet for finding a close space. There are also designated loading zones that prove to be very helpful at the beginning and end of your beach day.

Further outside of the town center will IMG_5614lead you to Cape May Point, including the lighthouse and Cape May Point State Park. Although not swimmable, the state park beach connects to the Cove and the walk between both areas is a beautiful one. If you choose to take it, be sure to stay on the lookout for dolphins and various species of shore birds. Begin or end your beach experience with a lighthouse climb or an excursion through the Cape May Point nature trails. The remaining beaches on the point are guarded and parking is free. The feeling is that of being on a truly private beach. Because the Point is almost exclusively residential, you won’t find any restaurants, arcades, or amenities here. A deterrent for some to be sure, we know to others it’s a definition of paradise.

Finally, a visit to Cape May is not complete without experiencing Sunset Beach. Located at the very end of sunset Blvd., Sunset Beach of course features gorgeous sunset vistas, a gift shop, and a beach grille. It’s also home to famous Cape May Diamonds-which are actually quartz pebbles that can resemble diamonds when they are washed down and/or cut. They are a truly unique Cape May souvenir found right on the beach!

So now that you are aware of which beaches you can and should visit when here in Cape May, here is some pertinent beach information to ensure that your beach trip is a seamless one:

+Lifeguards are on duty until 5:30 pm daily throughout the summer

+Food and beverages are allowed on the beach, but alcohol is not permitted

+Parking is available across the beachfront, but the majority is metered. Free parking can be located on side streets a few blocks back from the beachfront.

+Umbrellas, tents, and any sort of temporary canopies ARE permitted-but only for the day. Camping out on the beach overnight is not allowed (even if it IS a nice thought!)

+Any sort of grilling, cooking, or bonfire is not permitted on any Cape May area beach

+In season, dogs are not permitted on the beaches

+Restrooms are provided sporadically along the promenade for your convenience

+Beach passes are required for Cape May and Cape May Point Beaches

With this information in mind, it’s time to choose your beach and get to it! We recommend trying different beach locations over the course of your stay. But we’re sure that whichever beach you choose will not disappoint.

Happy Summer!

Early Season Limbo? Not in Cape May!

As Memorial Day 2016 is already but a memory, we are full steam ahead now towards the 2016 summer season here in Cape May. With the buzz of the holiday weekend behind us it’s easy to look ahead towards Independence Day festivities and the long weekend that will accompany them. With many schools still in session for a few more weeks and weather not quite at its peak of warmth, one may be inclined to view the month of June as a sort of season in limbo; a time of waiting for summer to begin rolling. But at Homestead, we’re here to encourage you that the season has indeed begun, and June is not a holding pattern; rather it’s a time of activity and excitement that’s well worth exploring. Let us enlighten you as to a handful of reasons why…

On Saturday, June 4th, the place to be is Wilbraham Park in beautiful West Cape May . From 9 amIMG_0552 until 5 pm , the West Cape May Business Association will present its annual Strawberry Festival. In what has become a traditional event for many Cape May locals and visitors, the festival is your destination for delicious Jersey strawberries and fantastic confections of a strawberry theme. There are also on site artisans featuring a wide variety of strawberry goods not only limited to food. Strawberry pottery, clothing, and even jewelry will be 1493230_344767932374970_7102217485550356905_nfeatured. We urge you to visit the festival between 1 and 4 pm, as at this time The Squares will be performing-featuring Homestead’s very own Debra Donahue. Allow yourself to be serenaded as you dine and shop. And speaking of Homestead, our company will be a presence at the festival as well! Look for the black Homestead tent and stop by to say hello. We will even present you with the chance to win a fabulous new beach chair! (Rain date is Sunday, 6/5)

Monday, June 6th will mark the 161st birthday of Dr. Emlen Physick, sponsored by the Mid Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC). If you’ve had the IMG_1195privilege of visiting Cape May in the past, we suspect you may be familiar with the famous Physick Estate on Washington St. And if not, it’s time to pay a visit to the magnificent home! Dr. Physick’s celebration will take place between the hours of 11:00 am and 2:00 pm. Admission is FREE and attendees are encouraged to wear their summer whites, as there will be an opportunity to watch (or even join) a croquet match.

trolleytourMoving through the month of June, MAC will also be sponsoring “Community Day” on Sunday the 12th. This is the perfect opportunity to tour a handful of Cape May’s most fascinating attractions, including the Lighthouse, World War II Lookout Tower, and of course the aforementioned Physick Estate. The ever popular guided trolley tours (which include a Physick Estate tour) will also be running throughout the day. If you’re a Cape May County resident be sure to make mention of that fact, as Community Day holds a surprise for you that you won’t want to miss!

We never hesitate to remind our visitors that Cape May is a year round community with year round fun. If Cape May were a sundae, then the beach is the cherry on top! Yes, our beaches are among the best in the country…but there’s so much more to do and see. So instead of waiting for the heart of summer to be upon us, enjoy these early June weeks for all they have to offer. You’ll be so glad you did.

Here are a list of additional activities which we encourage you to explore in the coming weeks:
6/5-6/12: Cape May Restaurant Week
6/6: Delany & Rutherford at the Rusty Nail (4:30-8:30 pm)
6/7: Cape May Music Festival-New York Chamber Ensemble Concert (8-10 pm)
6/8-6/11: 36th South Jersey Shark Tournament
6/11 and 6/12: Cape May’s Boardwalk Craft Show (on the Promenade)

Honor the Brave Who Have Served and Sacrificed this Memorial Day

memorial-day-354082_1920

We all get excited for Memorial Day Weekend, the traditional beginning to summer (especially important in an area rich in attractions and seaside enjoyment). But we should also remember why most of us get to enjoy this extended weekend and the liberties that come with the pride and honor of calling ourselves “American”.  It is because of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in protecting our country, our freedoms, and all we tout as as our national ideals.
