Cape May is a timeless treasure on the east coast that greatly comes alive in late July. With its pristine beaches, historic Victorian architecture, and vibrant local culture, Cape May offers an unforgettable summer escape in a quintessential beach town. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a summertime local, here is a quick guide to experiencing the best of mid-summer magic in Cape May.
Day 1: Mid-Summer Sun, Sandwiches, and Sea Glass
Rise and Shine with the Sun
Grab a custom, house roasted coffee at one of our favorite local cafés, The Buoy Coffee Shop, just steps away from the beach and start your day watching the sun rise over the Atlantic Ocean. You can catch the golden glow over Cape May’s gorgeous coastline as you prepare for a day at the beach. Pack your towel, a good book, and sunscreen to settle in the sand for a day of relaxation. Enjoy the quiet north end or the bustling mid-town beaches. Either way, you are guaranteed to find a perfect spot to soak up the sun and take a refreshing dip in the ocean.
Enjoy a Mid-Summer Treat with a Specialty Sandwich
After a morning of beach fun, order some up specialty sandwiches from West Side Market – our staff favorite is the Jersey Girl! This local market has been a neighborhood staple since 1902. With an excellent menu to choose from, West Side is a great spot to grab lunch to take back to the beach or enjoy at a picnic table in tree lined Wilbraham Park.
Embrace the Magic of a Sunset and Sea Glass Stroll
One of the best parts of mid-summer magic in Cape May is our famous sunsets. As the day winds down and the night approaches, head over the one of the bayside beaches to catch the breathtaking magic of the sun setting over the Delaware Bay. While you are enjoying the sight, comb the beach while you stroll for the many shades of sea glass that pepper the sand and our well-known “Cape May Diamonds” – smooth quartz stones that wash up on the beach.
Day 2: Magic in History, Adventure and Indulgence
Explore the Magic of Cape May’s Historic District
Take a leisurely walk through Cape May’s historic district where stunningly preserved Victorian homes line the streets. In 1761 Cape May officially became “The Nation’s Oldest Seashore Resort” and in 1976 Cape May was designated a “National Historic Landmark”. With the town’s deep roots and rich history, Cape May MAC offers an abundance of guided tours. The tours are equally informative and entertaining to both visitors and locals alike.
Whale and Dolphin Watching
Cape May is a top destination for whale and dolphin watching. Be sure to book a tour with Cape May Whale Watcher and set sail on a great Cape May adventure. Generally, tours run from morning to night – offering dinner cruises, lighthouse cruises and sunset cruises to see these impressive creatures in their natural environment. Watching dolphins playing in the waves and whales breaching near the water’s surface is truly and unforgettable Cape May adventure.
Mid-Summer Indulgence in Downtown Cape May
End your day with a relaxed walk through Washington Street Mall. The nostalgic pedestrian shopping area is lined with boutique stores, eateries and ice cream parlors. You will find boutiques featuring wares from local authors and artists. There is also gourmet restaurants featuring fish and farm to table menus, downtown Cape May will certainly not disappoint. Nothing quite says indulgence like ending your night with decadent ice cream from King’s Ice Cream Parlour. The Ube Dream is our sundae of choice!

Mid- Summer Magic at Cape May Point State Park
Begin your day with a visit to Cape May Point State Park. You can climb the 199 steps of the Cape May Lighthouse that was built in 1859 and experience beautiful panoramic views of the area. Afterwards, explore the nature trails that wind through the park. Cape May Point is known as a premier birdwatching destination. Mid-Summer Wine Tasting at Willow Creek Winery
Cape May is home to several exceptional wineries. Spend your afternoon at Willow Creek Winery, where you can experience the farming culture of our area and enjoy a tasting of locally sourced and produced wines. Willow Creek is kid and pet friendly. The vineyard is open to explore, complete with a human size chess board to play and Adirondack chairs to relax.
