While it’s no secret that Cape May is one of the best summer beach destinations in the nation, what most don’t know is just how much you can enjoy winter in Cape May as well! The crowds are smaller and this busy summer destination becomes a quiet and cozy shore town with plenty of winter activities.
Below are just a few of the many things to do in Cape May in the winter.
Enjoy A Little Shopping
Bundle up and enjoy a hot cup of coffee while you take a stroll. The Washington Street Mall is a cobblestone outdoor mall right downtown. Some of the stores are seasonal but a few of our favorites, like South of Jackson are open year round!
If you would rather shop indoors, find your way to West End Garage where you can find over 50 boutique stores and a bakery all under one roof. With everything from antiques to clothes and local artwork, you can have the most unique experience in this small-town shopping paradise.
Enjoy Cape May History
If you are a history enthusiast, Cape May will certainly not be dissapointing. Cape May is the only city in it’s entirety to be declared a National Historic Landmark. The town has one of the largest collections of Victorian architecture in the country. You can enjoy winter in Cape May by strolling the streets to check out the intricate details of the Victorian era for yourself.
If you would rather be indoors, visit one of our local museums. The Harriet Tubman Museum is located downtown and has guided and self-guided tour options available. Here you can learn how Cape May played a pivotal role in abolitionist activism. Or, visit The Emlen Physick Estate. This is a Victorian house museum where you can see how the residence of Cape May lived in the late 1800s.
Enjoy Some Family Fun
Winter in Cape May transforms Convention Hall into a roller-skating rink. Locals and visitors alike can enjoy hours of skating fun with beachfront views. If skating isn’t your thing, only 7 miles away from Cape May is Island Bowl, located in Wildwood. Here you can enjoy some pizza and a frame or two with the family.
Another great local family fun adventure is Gateway 26. The local year round arcade located in Wildwood has multiple rooms filled with ski ball, slot machines and claw machines! Although winter may be cold, this is the perfect spot for a summer-like break!
Enjoy A Local Spirit
Although Cape May has become a destination for beautiful beaches, it is also known for its wineries, breweries and distilleries. If an ale or lager is your preference, head over to Behr Brewing, Cape May Brewing Co., Gusto Brewing Company or Cold Spring Brewery to taste the selection.
Looking for a glass of local red or white? You can check out Cape May Winery, Willow Creek Winery & Farm or Hawk Haven Vineyard & Winery for a tasting flight. If you want to try something a little different, check out locally distilled and crafted cocktails at Nauti Spirits Distillery. Cape May has a great variety of farm and grain to glass for you to choose from.
